News & updates from the Social Media Research Foundation - 3 - 2020

Happy holidays & best wishes for a brighter & better 2021
Earthrise (NASA, 1968)

2020 has been a challenge for many people. Dominated by stories of pandemic, political conflict, and disinformation, 2020 was also a year of scientific breakthrough, renewed hope, and clarity.

Our users mapped many new topics this year, words that may not have made any sense a year ago: COVID, CORONA, NCOV, #FlattenTheCurve, Tier4 and others!

The concepts and methods of networks (and the flow of information and pathogens through them) have become more important than ever.  We are delighted to see the growing number of papers and publications that have made use of NodeXL to bring a complex and interconnected world into clearer focus.  We remain committed to building tools that enable deeper understanding of the collections of connections that define our lives.

While we must remain physically distant, we can remain socially connected! We wish you and yours a healthy and prosperous new year.

New: NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS
NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS - powered by Microsoft Power BI

A new way to see the data generated by NodeXL! NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS offers a powerful new way to present Twitter network data created with NodeXL.

NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS is the Influencer Network Social Identification (For) Groups Hashtags Time series (And) Sentiment!

NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS builds on the Microsoft Power BI platform and is now available for Students, Academics and Commercial Users.

NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS is a Microsoft Power BI report template that creates interactive and shareable network reports from the data in NodeXL Pro Twitter datasets. A NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS report makes use of many different data visualizations - from simple tables to hashtag clouds, from image grids to scatter plots.

This interactive view of NodeXL Twitter network data makes it easy to pivot around all the dimensions of social media datasets: Tweets, users, groups, hashtags, URLs, media, sentiment, space and time. Click here to view a full sample report online (optimized for web browsers Chrome and Edge).

NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS simplifies the process of displaying NodeXL data sets and highlighting the insights within them while expanding the range of devices that can be used to richly interact with data visualizations. Almost any web browser can display NodeXL Pro INSIGHTS reports to highlight changes over time, the geographic distribution of participants, the most influential users, the sentiment of the tweets, and quickly create side by side comparisons of two different sub populations.

Power BI is an application that builds on Excel data and SQL databases to deliver interactive data visualization and analysis to the desktop and the web.  The Microsoft Power BI Desktop application is free for all users.  The Power BI Pro web service has a modest monthly fee (USD $9) for additional features (many universities and large corporations may already have access to Power BI Pro - check with your IT support!).
