Examining YouTube Channel in North Korea: A Case of ‘North
Korea Today’ using User Response and Text Analyses

Abstract: This study analyzed user responses and title texts regarding videos appearing on North Korea's propaganda YouTube channel, “Today's North Korea (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCndGz3c8ImJ216C4kZMxaWA)". The video titled ‘Last opportunity’, made for military threats to the international community, has attracted views, likes, and dislikes the most. However, the other popular video clips included the contents of the life culture and advertisement. The term ‘unification’ appeared only five times when the U.N. resolution was passed, but 30 times since President Moon's election and 11 times after the Panmunjom meeting. The term ‘peace’ was the six times after U.N. sanction, the 21 times after THAAD deployment, increased up to the 32 times since Mr. Moon's election, and the six times after the Panmunjom meeting. What's interesting about analyzing words that are frequently used in video titles is that words related to capitalism and the market economy such as ‘factory’ ‘production’ ‘business’, and ‘science’ were ranked high. North Korea has been gradually moving away from political news for propaganda purposes and has been focusing on attracting foreign tourists and selling products recently.
